Q. Installing a kit on an existing bicycle – Yes or No?
A. This question is asked by many potential buyers. Why not simply buy a kit and fit it to an existing bicycle?
Fitting a kit is only feasible and/or legal in exceptional cases, such as:
The construction of a special bicycle pursuant to the specific customer requirements with special requisites.
Adapting a bicycle to people with physical disabilities.
Generally, all kits that are imported into Israel are smuggled in. The installer/vendor requires proof that the product has been approved by the Ministry of Transport and the Israeli Institute of Standards.
If you do not have an Israeli Standard mark nor authorization from the Ministry of Transport, there is no oversight for your imports.
You need to trust am importer who considers your well being and not just his bottom line. The question is why get involved in such an escapade in the first place.
If you ride a bicycle that has not been approved by the Ministry of Transport, you are committing a criminal offence. Is it worth the trouble? Will your insurance cover you in the case of an accident, heaven forbid, or will they (the insurance company) look for a way to not pay you? This gives them a good excuse!
Is there a difference in cost between a good compliant bicycle and a kit and installing it? It is unlikely. Generally kits that are brought in are not tailored for a specific bicycle. The result is an unsuitable power ratio.
The majority of motors are fitted to the front wheel. If the motor is not suited to that specific model, deficient control and imbalance could ensue. This is a hazardous situation! There are very few experts in the industry who are able to adapt a particular kit to a particular bicycle.
This is expertise which should not be taken lightly!
To summarize: Legally, it is generally prohibited. From the practical and economic aspects: in 97% of cases, a kit is not worthwhile and is not suitable.
In addition, a severe warning was published to this effect in The Marker Magazine dated February 9, 2011.
